Blog #20 Lexical Translation

Algunas Bestias

By Pablo Neruda

Era el crepúsculo de la iguana.
Desde la arcoirisada crestería
su leengua como un dardo
se hundía en la verdura,
el hormiguero monacal pisaba
con melodioso pie la selva,
el guanaco fino como el oxigeno
en las anchas alturas pardas
iba calzando botas de oro,
mientras la llama abria cándidos
ojos en la delicadeza
del mundo lleno de rocio.
Los monos trenzaban un hilo
interminablemente erótico
en las riberas de la aurora,
derribando muros de polen
y espantando el vuelo violeta
de las mariposas de Muzo
Era la noche de los caimanes,
la noche pura y pululante
de hocicos saliendo del légamo,
y de las ciénagas soñolientas
un ruido opaco de armaduras
volvía al origen terrestre.
El jaguar tocaba las hojas
con su ausencia fosforescente,
el puma corre en el ramaje
como el fuego devorador
mientras arden en él los ojos
alcohólicos de la selva.
Los tejones rascan los pies
del río, husmean el nido
cuya delicia palpitante
atacarán con dientes rojos.
Y en el fondo del agua magna,
como el círulo de la tierra,
está la gigante anaconda
cubierta de barros rituales,
devoradora y religiosa.

Some Beasts

It was the twilight of the iguana.
From the rainbow cresting
its like a dart leengua
dipped in vegetable
the monastic anteater trod
walk the jungle with melodious ,
guanaco fine as oxygen
in the wide brown heights
he was wearing his shoes gold
while the llama opened candid
eyes in the delicacy
the world of dew.
The monkeys braided thread
endlessly erotic
on the banks of the aurora,
topples a pollen
and shooing violet flight
Butterflies Muzo
It was the night of the alligators ,
pure night and swarming
I snouts out of silt ,
and sleepy marshes
an opaque armor noise
returned to the terrestrial origin.
The jaguar touches the leaves
with its phosphorescent absence
puma running in the branches
as the devouring fire
while burning his eyes on him
spirits of the forest.
Badgers scratch feet
River , sniff the nest
whose throbbing delight
They attack with red teeth.
And at the bottom of magna water
Cirules as land ,
is the giant anaconda
Cover rituals mud,
devouring and religious .

Blog #19 Dread

"Dread"

Waiting for the light to turn green a young woman sits in her wore out blue jeans
dreading her time for work.

She knows they will nag her. And why not? Isn’t that what she is there for?
She wonders if the older one will give her a headache? Why not?

A little pain for a little paycheck.
Perhaps they will answer their own questions remember their own appointments.
Their minds remember more than hers. Whatever happens is alright just got to remember a only six
hours to go.

Perhaps they’ll want to watch a movie with her. That would be great.
Or perhaps I will have to make them many meals. It’s their right. It’s what I am there for.

The Good Lord has a funny way of showing me patience.

And so she waited for that light to turn green with an optimistic view that God would take pity upon her.

Who or what is "The Eternal Footman"? Why is this footman or servant snickering at Prufrock?

Prufrock is a self aware individual always wondering what the right decision is or how to behave in certain situations. For example how to approach the ladies.

"In the room the women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo."

Another situation is when he mentions the bald spot in his head and what the ladies will think of this bald spot.

"With a bald spot in the middle of my hair-
(They will say: "How his hair is growing so thin.")

Prufrock is so self conscious that he doesn't understand that when the Eternal Footman snickers at him, its because he is a lost cause. The Eternal Footman is like a servant opening the gates to the after life. Prufrock is close to death all this time he thinks he has, is not really true. He is no time left to really undue or reconsider certain situations. He can't rise from the dead like Lazarus, the Eternal Footman is there waiting for him like the Angel of Death.

"Time for you and time for me,
And time yet for a hundred in decisions,
And for a hundred visions and revisions,
Before the taking of toast and tea."

With the Eternal Footman following Prufrock around. With the references to the rising of Lazarus Prufrock knows his time is near.

"I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker"

"I grow old...I grow old..."

The greatness of his youth has flickered and gone away leaving the old age to set in. The Eternal Footman waits and snickers for the old man to finally die. The Footman snickers at Prufrock for his misguided thoughts of visions and redemption's. It's too late to fix things when he is on his death bed.

To Be Free

After driving two hours to wilderness,
Sunset strives for one last shine.
And the eyes of the deer
Glow green with understanding.
They shield themselves from more prying eyes,
To hide themselves from me.
We step over the rotted log into the meadow
Where they assume no one will find them.
They stiffen suddenly, unsure of what to do,
Calmed it was nothing they resume.
They graze peacefully together. They are free.
There is no peacefulness like theirs.
At their habitation yet again,
They begin grazing away summer and spring in the last bit of sunlight.
I would like to touch the spotted one,
For it is the smallest one of the herd,
Resembles a baby.
He is gold and brown,
The light reflects the freckles on his back,
His big brown eyes capture mine,
I am lost in another world.
Suddenly I realize
That they are peace, they are free, how can I take it away,
I want to be at peace.

Blog # 16 Does poetry matter

I think poetry does matter to our world. Poetry is like an art form, another way of expressing ones self. Poetry gives off emotions. Through poetry you can experience what the writer is feeling or trying to convey. We may never actually know the intent of ones poem, but the feeling and the emotion is there. It's hard to write a poem that a certain number of feet or certain type of poem, but in today's world we don't follow patterns. Nothing is perfect. No one strives to be perfect. Imperfection and the beauty of finding what's different about our own selves, is what our modern day of age is about. Through poetry we get a deep understanding of the character of the writer. Through poetry secrets are revealed or conveyed, if you can figure out the secret. Poetry makes you think about life in ways we never had to before. This makes poetry a turn off for some, but others that love riddles this is for them. Poetry does matter and does have a place in this modern world. Poetry is alive. We see poetry and experience poetry in advertising, movies, and song. Poetry is like a mind it does not rest, you have to let out the feeling of what you are experiencing.

Blog #13 "His Voice"

"His Voice"
The thrill of his voice

Created a warmth

That rushed from my head

To my tummy within

I had no choice

But to let a swarm

Of butterflies rush in

Melted on the inside

Am I by not just your words

But your beautiful smile

Could I gaze upon you endlessly

This is absurd

Could one be so amazingly

Beautiful and talented?

Blog #12 "One Step forward, two steps back"

"One Step Forward, Two Steps Back"

One step forward two steps back, I am frustrated
Skip the tears, nothing works, bring on the anger
I heard frustration brings on the tears.
School, work, money, I am overwhelmed
Money, a life, happiness, I longed
When will I feel peace

Peace what is peace?
Nothing goes as planned, no wonder I am frustrated
Things to go smooth I longed
Rising, building, surfacing is the anger
Anger over being frustrated makes me overwhelmed
When will this stop? I hate tears

Salty sweet tears
Tears bring calm and peace
This feeling makes me overwhelmed
I know longer feel so frustrated
The frustration disappeared with anger
Oh, how this I longed.

I longed
No more tears
No more anger
Just peace
No frustration
No being overwhelmed

Slowly I am overwhelmed
Peace I have longed
Slowly I become frustrated
Bring on the tears
What happened to peace?
Slowly it builds anger

Such a powerful thing anger
Brought on from the feeling of being overwhelmed
It doesn't last forever that peace
Peace and Understanding I longed
Sadness, hopelessness tears
One step forward, two steps back I am frustrated.

Blog # 11 "That Little Brother!"

That Little Brother!

He was young
too young
full of life
adventure and
mystery

Just a boy
barely a teen
member of the
football team.

Climbing trees
running and digging
in the fields
he loved.

Handsome he was
for just a boy
a true Ladies Man.

My Little Brother
he was.

Until that girl
blonde and pretty
she was

She came from
another town
excitement prevailed.
never a smile
never a laugh
never even
an acknowledgment
just too quiet
she was.

Summer turned
into fall
which then
turned into winter.
All that time
they stayed together
whether they had to hitch hike
to see one another.

That following spring
not only did the flowers bloom
and ripen
the blonde girl's form
did also.

That summer
my little brother
beat me
into parenthood.

Blog #10 Comparison of "Bartleby, the Scrivener" & "Orientation"

"Bartleby, the Scrivener," Herman Melville and "Orientation," Daniel Orozco

In "Bartleby, the Scrivener," by Herman Melville and "Orientation," by Daniel Orozco, these stories have connection between the interaction of coworkers. In "Orientation" the coworkers are familiar with each others lifestyles. They know each other like they would a friend or family member. An example of this would be "Russell Nash, who sits in the cubicle to your left, is in love with Amanda Pierce, who sits in the cubicle to you right."(Orozco 46). "They ride the same bus together after work."(Orozco 46). "For Russell Nash, this is the highlight of his day."(Orozco 46). How would the narrator know this if the staff was not on open terms with each other? In "Bartleby, the Scrivener" the employees seem to not have much of life outside of work, but rather than a family within. Turkey and Nippers often have lunch and know each other very well. I think his conduct quite unusual, and, indeed, unjust, as regards to Turkey and myself." (Melville 415) "Nippers and I dined together to-day."(Melville 415). The effect of the coworkers knowing each other helps the office run smoother. Coworkers understanding how each other's minds work help the teamwork process.

In both "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and "Orientation" the lack of productivity is evident among the employees. In "Orientation" the workers do what is exactly on the to do list for the day and they stay their entire scheduled shift. "We pace our work according to the eight-hour work day. If you have twelve hours of work in your IN box, you must compress that work into an eight-hour day. If you have an hour of work in you IN box, you must expand that into an eight-hour day."(Orozco 46) In "Bartleby, the Scrivener" the workers work at their own pace and demeanor to get the job done. "All his blots upon my documents were dropped there after twelve o'clock, meridian. Indeed, not only would he be reckless, and sadly given to making blots in the afternoon, but, some days, he went further, and was rather noisy." (Melville 408) The effect of the lack of productivity in the office, shows future clients the lazy, relaxed version of the office. This could lead clients to believe that the lawyer is not conducted properly, is rather lazy, and is a poor boss to allow so unprofessionalism.

In these stories of "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and "Orientation" the value of a job for these employees is expendable. In "Orientation" the receptionist's know that if they do like the position they are hired for, they can go and get another job. " We go through receptionists here. They quit with alarming frequency." (Orozco 46). In "Bartleby, the Scrivener" the employees do their jobs, but in carefree way. For example Turkey "indeed, not only would he be reckless, and sadly given to making blots in the afternoon, but some days, he went further, and was rather noisy."(Melville 408). The effect of the employees not valuing their jobs reflects on the boss and business. When employees do not care about their jobs that gives people a reason to not consider doing business with you. If your employee does not care and take you seriously, than why should I?

A & P Blog # 7

In John Updike's A & P, women are depicted as haughty and clueless, in a way. For example the woman that Sammy referred to as a "witch" who watched the price closely, was rude and gave off the impression that she was better than Sammy. Another example is how Queenie walked down the aisles, she walked with her back straight and head up; Sammy made the comment about not knowing what was going through girls' minds as Queenie's feet hit the ground a little too hard.
In this piece the role women play would be considered a major role. The women's actions help tell the story and the culture at the time. It was not acceptable to go into stores without your shoulders being covered or even shoes on.
The girls or "Queenie" comes off as dominant with the way her posture is set as she strolls through the store with her followers, but as the manager confronts her of her lack of proper clothing, she turns into the submissive role.
The women's role play a major part in this story. Without them in the story there would be no purpose. Sammy would have still been working at his boring job, dealing with the usual customers that he disliked. The women showing up in the story showed him about breaking the rules the consequences and the fun of them.
Sammy's attitude towards women is that they are clueless, but the pretty ones are nice to look at. Sammy couldn't take his eyes off of Queenie and her followers. Sammy saw the women as beneath him along with every other customer in the store, even though his class would be considered the same or less.
The male characters in the story talk down to the women. The manager scolded the girls for not wearing proper clothing, Sammy's thoughts went to "is there even a mind in there or a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar."
The females all talk with a female authority to the males. Example the older woman the "witch" spoke to Sammy as if she were his boss. Queenie spoke to the manager as if she were going to flirt her way out of the predicament, using her female sex appeal.

Mrs. Mallard- 8am This morning my sister Josephine informed me that my husband was killed in a railroad disaster.-with Richards.

Mrs. Mallard 8:10am- The pain is too much. It's difficult to distinguish between my heart break or my actual heart failure.

Mrs. Mallard 8:20am- A black cloud of sorrow consumes me. Opening my window, I feel the possession will win over my mind, as if something dark is reaching for me.

Mrs. Mallard 8:30am- The black clouds outside my window aren't black anymore blue sky is shining through. Maybe my husbands death is a good thing.

Mrs. Mallard 8:40 am- I can breathe again. My husband's control is no longer upon me. I can fly down those stairs and run in the fields. I can do what I want with my life.

Mrs. Mallard 8:50am- Don't get me wrong my husband wasn't too bad, but we weren't in love like we should've been.

Mrs. Mallard 8:55am- I feel free, finally. After all the years I can leave my house and see people and the world. I can find out who I am as a person.

Blog # 5 "Orientation"-A Guide to the Office

 "A Guide to the Office"

This is the front desk. This is the back office. Doctor’s office is here. Kelly’s office is right across from Doctor’s, she is his wife, and she is responsible for the medical and patient billing. This is a room used for storing medical files. This room is for doctor’s children.

This room is the break room; it’s mainly used for storing food in the refrigerator or heating food in the microwave. Check expiration dates, I found mayonnaise in here that expired back 2005. All the Nutrisystem items are doctors don’t eat them, he doesn’t eat them either, but he’ll know. Don’t heat your breakfast here Kelly will have a fit and complain that it nauseates her. You can heat your food up at lunch, but not before you will get in trouble for sitting on your bottom. Lunches are an hour unless it’s your week to answer the phones. During those weeks you can’t leave the office, but you can eat your lunch. Be mindful that you are still working and Kelly will give you lots of things to do, even if you are eating. Doctor comes back from his lunch early sometimes to take a nap, Never ask him anything when he is taking a nap, don’t knock on the door, be really quiet; if you don’t he will be really mean for the rest of the day.

These are the patient rooms. Keep them cleaned and picked up. Patients don’t need to see a dirty room and the wife will find out and make you feel like crap. Always wipe down the tables after each patient, and make sure the lotions are put away nice and neat. If you drop lotion on the floor just rub it in the carpet with a towel or your foot, doctor or the patient won’t notice anyway, because the floors look awful and they were cleaned a week ago. Green gowns are the biggest gowns save those for large people. Red gowns are for medium sized they can go on average people. Blue gowns go on small people, there aren’t very many so use them on small people.

Do not put large people in this room, they will break the table. Put people with big bellies in these rooms the tables drop down for their bellies. Use lots of lotion on hairy backs, it is gross, but refrain from making comments you will be fired. Use lots of pressure on bigger men when giving a massage, they will complain if you don’t. If your hands are not hurting by the end of the day you didn’t use enough pressure. These tables will rise up to be level with your hip, do not touch the tables to do this, you will be yelled at by doctor and so will the rest of us. Don’t ask common sense questions to Doctor he will think you are stupid just ask the staff.

If Doctor comes in cranky and rude, his wife will be really nice. If the doctor compliments you on your hair or your outfit Kelly will copy you the next day to see if he will give her the same reaction, he won’t so be sure to compliment her. When doctor and Kelly argue from their offices there will always be a patient in the lobby, be sure to speak to them so they don’t over hear. If you have any questions ask me or another co-worker, don’t ask doctor or Kelly they don’t run the office they just think they do and the answer is always wrong.

Blog Assignment # 4 A Good Man is Hard to Find

In the story A Good Man Is Hard to Find we understand the reality of that, a good man is hard to find. A family of an American Southern background embarks upon a family vacation and run into “the Misfit” a serial killer on the loose that escaped from Federal Prison. This Southern family believes in God and forgiveness. They believe in repenting and asking for forgiveness through prayer. The misfit felt he was wrongly accused and sentenced to prison. He claims he was in there for so long he doesn’t understand his crime. He doesn’t believe in God anymore and certainly does not want to pray. The misfit claims he has lost all of his morals once he was wrongfully imprisoned. He does not understand why he should be good now when he was imprisoned for being good. This story lets the readers believe the family will have a happy ending, that the family will meet a good man. The story does not end that way. The story is grotesque. From the very beginning of the story the old woman pointed out a newspaper clipping about the Misfit, along the way she mentioned the Misfit to the diner the family ate at, and when they wreck there vehicle it’s the Misfit they run into. Instead of saving the family and being grateful for being out of prison the Misfit shoots the family and takes their belongings to his better gain. The Misfit is a secular grotesque those who have for one reason or another rejected God's will and seek to destroy the soul in an attempt to save the body. The Misfit sees no reason to let the family live and does not care; he proves the title to be somewhat true A Good Man is Hard to Find.

In Shirley Jackson's, "The Lottery," one theme is Man's ability (and need) to rationalise generally unacceptable actions. It's true in life how we have to rationalize everything or have a reason for everything, to make it acceptable in our eyes. In life we have to turn our heads the other direction when a convicted murder is set back on the streets after 25 years, it is unacceptable, but in today's society that is the law. In this story everyone went along with the tradition of "sacrificing" a community member. No one showed how they felt, but Tessie the one that was chosen. She didn't choose to be sacrificed, wouldn't it have been a true sacrifice if Tessie was actually willing to die for a good cause? Why does Man rationalize unacceptable actions? Are we truly that much of a follower to not stick up for unacceptable actions? What's it going to take to show people that in the end it's not the community that mattered in life, but the individual? Why do we turn the other cheek, instead of sticking up for what's right in our eyes?

Girl to Boy

Wash your clothes on Monday after school and don't forget to put them in the dryer, I am not your maid. Clean your room on Tuesday, Lord only knows what I would find in there. Wear sunscreen in the sun. Don't use all the hot water with your showers. Put your dirty clothes in a laundry basket. Wear nice clothes to school and church, not the ones with holes and grass marks. Chew your food before you speak. Do not belch or even think about passing gas at the dinner table. Put the toilet seat up. Put the toilet seat down. Aim for the toilet if you miss clean it up.  but I don't have clean clothes by Sunday. This is how you wash dishes. This is how you vacuum. This is how you sweep and mop. Always say hello to your father when he comes home, he put the roof over your head. Fill up the gas tank on half full. This is where you take the oil to get changed in the car. This is how you wash the car. This is how you dress to impress a lady. Always give her a compliment even if you don't actually mean it. Buy a girl flowers if you like her. Be nice to all girls even if you don't like them. Don't get in arguments with other guys in front of girl. what if the other guy starts it? It doesn't matter you end it. Show your mother respect don't argue with her. Listen to advice from your family, even if it's not good advice. Be polite to your elders, they will still spank you. This is how to make good money. This is how to look like you got lots of money. don't light ants on fire in the back yard the neighbors will call the cops. Don't steal shoes because your mother won't buy them for you. Don't throw a fit if you don't see your girlfriend. Where protection, its called protection for a reason. Don't try smoking. Don't drink alcohol you will end up in Jail and in AA meetings with your grandmother. Don't listen to your father when he tells you to go work for Clearwater Paper. But they have retirement and they make good money and they have benefits. Do you really want to spend the rest of your life at 19 working in a mill?
